Branch Jail Release Meanings

Volusia County Branch Jail is the county system's central intake, booking, bond, and first-appearance site. It holds people awaiting trial, state-sentenced people awaiting movement, and medium- or high-custody nonsentenced men. When its record shows that custody ended, the next destination depends on the legal event. Bond, recognizance, pretrial supervision, sentence completion, or another court order can produce a community release. A movement to the Volusia County Correctional Facility, Florida Department of Corrections, another county, a federal custodian, or immigration custody is a transfer.

That distinction matters because the county archive records when Volusia County Division of Corrections stopped holding a person on one booking. It does not promise that every other authority released the person. Booking staff also track holds for other agencies and arrange transport to state prison. The useful question is not just whether Branch Jail custody ended, but who had authority next.

Confirm Branch Jail Release Records

The official Volusia inmate information search covers both county jail buildings. Archive mode is the key after release. A current-only search can miss the very booking being checked because released people no longer belong on a live custody roster.

1. Accept the county search disclaimer, then enter a last and first name or the booking number.
2. Select Include Archive Records in Search. Compare the identity fields where similar names appear.
3. Read Booking Date, Release Date, and InCustody. A release timestamp with InCustody = N shows that VCDC custody ended for that booking.
4. Open the booking number. Note the court case number, charge status, bond data, and any disposition shown.
5. Use the receiving custodian when the record points to a transfer. A county release timestamp by itself is not proof of community freedom.

The county search explains the local booking. It does not replace a case disposition. If the exact legal result matters, compare the booking detail with the Clerk docket and request the official jail release record. Archive result rows carry a booking number, thumbnail photo, inmate ID, name fields, sex, race, Booking Date, Release Date, and InCustody. The detail adds the larger image, charge descriptions, statute fields, bond type and amount, arrest and court case numbers, disposition, and charge status. A code such as pretrial release may help explain the event, but it does not replace the underlying order. The exact release mechanism should be confirmed from the official booking record and court file when the distinction matters.

Online archive duration is not promised. Research in July 2026 found older released bookings, but one observed result cannot become a retention rule. Search by booking number when possible, then use the records portal if an older or certified record is absent online. A miss can also reflect spelling, an alias, processing lag, a juvenile matter, restricted information, or custody in a different jurisdiction.

Branch Jail Records and Contact

Volusia County Division of Corrections operates the Branch Jail separately from the Volusia Sheriff's Office. The jail, not the sheriff's incident-record custodian, is the proper starting point for a VCDC booking or release record. Booking and charge staff can route an immediate factual question, while the County Public Records Center is the documentary channel for an official copy.

A focused request should name the person, booking number, booking and release date, and desired items. Useful items include the booking sheet, release date and time, release code or reason, authorization, charge and bond history, holds, transfers, receiving-agency details, and any releasable booking photograph. Submit it through the Volusia County Public Records Center. The county publishes no special booking-photo fee, fixed turnaround, or online retention promise, so ask for an estimate when the request is broad.

For the court result, use the case number on the booking detail with the Volusia Clerk. A judge's order proves the judicial action. The jail timestamp proves when physical VCDC custody ended. Those two records answer different parts of the same question.

Branch Jail Release Timing

A court order does not produce an instant exit. Volusia says court must finish for the day, the person must return to the assigned unit, and Corrections must receive the paperwork before release processing starts. Processing generally takes two to four hours once it begins, though circumstances can change that span. Lobby screens at both county buildings display release information and can help a waiting family track the process.

Since April 29, 2024, VCDC does not release a person between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless a responsible party is physically present. That person must check in with Control and provide transportation away from VCDC property. The rule affects the physical exit time, not the court's legal decision. Calling ahead can prevent a long wait based on a docket entry alone.

Women held in the county system physically leave through the Correctional Facility, even when the case is associated with Branch Jail intake. That facility-specific rule is why the physical meeting place should be confirmed rather than inferred from the original booking location.

Branch Jail Release History

The Branch Jail opened in 1987. Volusia's 2024 annual report gives it a current design capacity of 1,042, replacing the older original-capacity figure still found in some county web copy. The Correctional Facility opened earlier, and later dorm work brought combined VCDC design capacity to 1,722. These are design figures, not a count of people currently held or released.

The facility's intake role explains why its name appears across many kinds of county cases. It does not mean every person finishes custody at the same door. Some move within VCDC, some go to FDC, and some leave under a community release. The archive and receiving-agency check remain more useful than guessing from the building name.

Branch Jail Release Detainers

Volusia entered a 287(g) Jail Enforcement Model agreement with ICE in February 2025. An immigration detainer may ask the jail to notify ICE before an otherwise authorized release and to hold the person briefly so federal officers can assume custody. As a result, a populated VCDC release date can mark a custody handoff rather than a return home.

After confirming the county release, search the ICE Online Detainee Locator with an A-number and country of birth, or with exact name, date of birth, and country of birth. The system has exclusions and can lag. A blank result cannot prove that ICE had no role. ICE's detention information line is 1-888-351-4024 when the online check remains unresolved.

A federal court matter follows a different trail. Use the federal docket for a pretrial release or transfer, and the BOP locator for a sentenced federal person. No BOP prison or dedicated ICE detention center was identified in Volusia County, so no invented local facility should be assumed.

Branch Jail Release Property

Corrections returns ordinary stored property and commissary items at release. Large bags or backpacks may have remained with the arresting agency, which means the jail may not control every item expected. Clothing kept at intake is reissued for release, and checks are made only in the inmate's name.

Before release, a person can submit a tablet Property Release Form. Call the Branch Jail to verify approval before traveling. Approved property may be collected at any hour with identification, remains approved for five days, and then returns to storage. This is an early property pickup, not evidence that the person's custody status changed.

For travel after a community release, VCDC reentry staff report arranging local or state-specific bus passes to family locations. VoTran Route 10 serves a shelter near the Branch Jail but does not enter the jail parking lot. Confirm the live route and account for the walk. A person transferred to another custodian follows that agency's transport instead.
